CYCLE OF BEHAVIOUR

Understanding the Why Behind Behaviour

Behaviour tells us something. When someone becomes overwhelmed, shuts down, withdraws, refuses, becomes distressed or reaches a point of escalation, it can be easy to focus on what happened. We want to understand why it happened.

The cycle of behaviour helps us look beneath what we can see. What happened before things became difficult? Were there sensory demands, unexpected changes, communication difficulties, frustration, anxiety, fatigue or expectations that became too much? What were the person's early signs? What helped them feel safe again? Most importantly, what can we learn so we can support them differently next time?

At The Connection Boutique, we can help you understand this cycle for yourself or your family member. Our Occupational Therapists, Educators and Key Workers have the knowledge and understanding to observe patterns, gather information and work alongside families, educators, support workers and other professionals to understand what may be driving behaviour. From there, we can develop practical strategies, make changes to environments and routines, build regulation and communication skills, and help the whole team respond more consistently.

For participants, we also want to build self-understanding. Over time, that might mean learning to recognise your own triggers and early warning signs, understanding what your body is communicating, knowing what helps you regulate and becoming more confident asking for what you need before you reach crisis point.

The goal isn't to stop a behaviour. It’s to understand what is going on for them and what they are trying to communicate.

We aim to understand the person, reduce the barriers around them and build the skills, environments and support that help them feel safe, understood and able to thrive.
