UNDERSTANDING THE NERVOUS SYSTEM

Our nervous system

Sometimes our reactions can feel bigger or faster than we expect. We might become angry, anxious, overwhelmed, shut down, want to escape or find ourselves agreeing with everyone just to keep things calm. These responses can make much more sense when we understand what our nervous system is trying to do.

The upstairs and downstairs brain is a simple way of understanding this. When we feel safe and regulated, our upstairs brain helps us think, learn, problem-solve, communicate and make choices. When our nervous system senses danger or becomes overwhelmed, our downstairs brain can take over. We may move into fight, flight or fawn as our body tries to protect us. In those moments, reasoning, learning and making good choices can become much harder.

At The Connection Boutique, we help participants and families look beyond the behaviour and understand what the nervous system may be communicating. Together, we can identify triggers and early warning signs, explore what helps the body feel safe and regulated, and build practical strategies that can be used at home, school, work and in the community.

Over time, we want you to understand your own nervous system too. We want you to recognise “I'm starting to feel overwhelmed,” know what helps you, make choices that support your wellbeing and communicate what you need to the people around you.

Because regulation isn't about learning to hide how you feel. It's about understanding yourself, feeling safe in your body and building the tools to respond in ways that work for you.
